Want to make the biggest impact with your donation? Consider giving a monetary gift.
We buy thousands of pounds of food at a time, as well as receive discounts due to our nonprofit status. Because of that, we can make a dollar go much further than an individual would be able to at a grocery store since we are able to buy wholesale or in bulk. The Food Shelf team also knows the specific needs of the community, season by season.
And this year, every dollar you give will go even further, since an anonymous donor has agreed to match online donations, up to $2,000!
Donations of food are also appreciated and are a great way to get kids involved and engaged in helping those less fortunate. Even young children can grasp the idea of giving, say, a jar of peanut butter to help feed someone who’s hungry. Food drives give organizations like youth groups a tangible sense of their contributions and when children watch you give, they will grow up knowing that giving back is the right thing to do and follow in your footsteps. So, donating to charity also helps you be a good role model for your kids.
So while food is still a welcome donation, a monetary gift gives food shelfs the greatest flexibility. Keep in mind that there might be a tax benefit if you donate a monetary gift rather than food, since the Hugo Good Neighbors Food Shelf is a 501c(3) non-profit organization.
Helping others feels good. When you donate to a charity that is important to you, you not only help them continue their vital work, you’re also improving your emotional wellbeing, a win-win situation!
If you are not able to contribute financially to charity, but are looking for other ways to give back, consider volunteering your time instead. You will meet new, like-minded people, learn new skills to add to your resume or complete necessary community hours for school programs. You can also get involved in the community that supports your favorite cause. For example, if you attend a fundraising event for your favorite charity, you’ll meet new, like-minded people who care about the same cause.
